Marketers consistently strive to create content that will both challenge and engage their audiences when the product that is being sold is the content itself. This is a veritable hurdle for both the writer and the marketer. Fully understanding content marketing and getting it right is more complex than most ardent promoters would like to admit, though easier than some may think.

Regardless of which end of the spectrum you lie, carrying these preconceived notions will hinder your effectiveness in succeeding. The first step to successful content is weeding out the myths inside your head. Discover the truths and they will lead you down potentially paved paths to prosperity.

Myth 1: Content marketing won’t last.

Reality: Although nobody can completely predict how long people will use the term “content marketing,” these specific principles are long-lasting. It seems likely that, eventually, content marketing will simply be referred to as “marketing.” Content seems to be here to stay and the bright companies who are willing to invest, will treat it as an asset, rather than an expense.

Myth 2: It is best to hire the cheapest bidder because writing is easy and anyone can do it.

Reality: This, of course, is completely false. Even though some writers may be much less expensive than others, chances are that their quality of work will be much lower, which won’t ensure the results necessary for you to be successful. Finding a great writer may sometimes be difficult, but often times, they are worth their price.

Myth 3: Content marketing solely consists of blog posts.

Reality: Blogs that are consistently updated with quality content can often serve as a strong base for a successful content marketing strategy. However, successful content is not only limited to blogs; experiment and try new things! You may discover that videos, infographics or articles may prove just as fruitful.

Myth 4: Content marketing is a fast, simple solution to all of your marketing problems.

Reality: Usually, it can take up to six months to begin seeing results from your content marketing strategies and efforts. In opposition to traditional marketing which provides immediate success or failure, content marketing is more like a marathon rather than a 100 meter sprint. It takes time, but in the end, it’s worth the wait and hard work.

Myth 5: Any content is good content.

Reality: Again, this is completely false. If you think that you can take a seat and creative, intuitive content will come pouring out of your fingertips and onto the computer screen, it’s time for you to wake up, have a cup of coffee, and welcome yourself to the real world. A guided strategy, a solid understanding of good content, and the ability to shape ideas and communicate them are all necessary elements to quality content.

There are facts and fictions to every good concept; however, be mindful when attempting to differentiate between the two. Some of these myths can make or break your content marketing strategies. Don’t take the shortcuts to reach the top because if you do, you’ll never get there.
